About the property:

3-BR, 1.5-bath 2-story home offers comfort, convenience to town, and direct water access

We call it "The Gust House" for a reason: the sea breezes—and sometimes wild winds—at our oceanfront cape with its fantastic views right from the house, where vacation or long-term stays are welcomed.

Soul and convenience: our lovingly updated 1930s cape-style farmhouse is situated on high ground right above the mouth of the Narraguagus Bay--and just 2 miles from Main Street. Eagles, ospreys and gulls soar overhead, and often perch right outside the back windows. Kitchen, dining area, and 2 of the 3 upstairs BR's overlook the bay, its islands and the ocean (facing east for the sunrise).  The enclosed 3-season front porch faces sunsets in the evenings.

Having this house was what hooked us on moving to Milbridge permanently; we now live full-time just across the water.  You can look at the bay and the boats all day from the back of the house and attached deck, or the lower landing/deck right over the water.  Swimming right off the landing in the protected, if Maine-chilly, waters of a little cove.  Nice tree-shaded walking in the area, bicycling and kayaking are easy here, and the town park that’s like a mini-Acadia is just 2 miles farther down the road.  Eagles court in the trees down by the water.  (See that one dead tree in the water view?  We keep it because the eagles love it.)

When we bought it in 2008, the house had not been updated since the 1960s. While renovating, we kept the original details we liked, including tin ceilings and hardwood flooring, and some of the vintage wallpaper. We opened up the dining area to the kitchen for the great circular flow that now exists downstairs; did major renewals/reno’s of kitchen, bath (including a jetted tub), water and electric systems; added a downstairs powder room and closets; replaced old windows to open up more light and view; and added a bi-level deck and BBQ area to the back of the house

Outdoors, we had the waterside deck/launch completely rebuilt—now a great place for meditation in the morning, Happy Hour or a party in the evening, and access to swimming in the cove, and to deep-water landing if you have a boat*.  We re-landscaped, planting several garden beds; and opened up the parking area, which can accommodate 3-4 vehicles.

It's a tremendously comfortable house, very private feeling inside and in the yard. Because it has woods on one side, and on the other is set back from our very nice next-door neighbor's home, it's remarkably private while also conveniently close to the road (good not just for winter travel but spontaneous getaways all year round).

Size of your party:  It most comfortably accommodates up to 5 people, given the arrangements in the 3 bedrooms upstairs and size of the indoor dining table. For the summer, the queen-size convertible sofa on the enclosed front porch affords some additional flexibility for sleeping arrangements if there's a 6th person.

BR’s upstairs have:

  • 1 Queen Bed with memory foam topper (water view)
  • 1 Double Bed with memory foam topper (water view)
  • 1Twin Bed with amazingly comfy memory foam mattress, set up as a daybed with back cushions.  This BR (front of house) also has a nice spinet piano.

OTHER AMENITIES:

  • Fully equipped kitchen (including lobster pot) and all dinnerware, etc.
  • Linens & towels provided
  • Laundry in basement
  • High-speed cable/internet/landline package, with many premium TV channels and music services.  Cell service has always worked fine here, but there’s also the cable landline for backup.
  • Flat-screen TV, audio system
  • Good gas grill/BBQ on back deck
  • Large sturdy folding table for meals on the back deck, or meals or puzzles on the front porch.

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • Lobster lovers: There are 2 lobster pounds right on this road!
  • Kayaking and bicycling are easy and fun from this property.
  • *Boat owners: deep-water landing is available with Town permit.

LOCATION, LOCATION:

Guests often tell us how much they enjoy Milbridge as a home base, and how happy they are about our location along the coast, since we're about equidistant from Mt. Desert Island (Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor) and the farthest-east coastal towns like Lubec and Eastport — and Campobello Island! Bring passports for Campobello; it's Canada. It's easy to make a day or half-day trip to these famous, fascinating vacation spots from our place, and also to visit the Canadian mainland.

2016 was the 100th Anniversary year of ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. The main part of the Park is on Mount Desert Island, about an hour from us. But a less-known section, Schoodic Point, is just about 25 minutes away, and is quieter, fewer crowds, same breath-taking views. Schoodic Point, this part of Acadia that Mainers tend to frequent, also has a fine information and conference center and campground, a lovely picnic area, and is near many art and craft studios.

Our guests' vacation and retreat rental fees help to support the work of Sunrise County Arts Institute, the small Maine company we founded in 2014 as a resource for quality music, theater, writing and visual arts activities in Milbridge and the DownEast/Acadia area.

TRAVELERS WITH PETS: We run as allergy-free a home as possible, for ourselves as well as our guests. We do ask guests to arrange for their animals to stay at home. But a single well-behaved HYPOALLERGENIC-ONLY dog may be considered. (These are dogs with hair rather than fur/dander; for example, Havanese, bichon, poodle, Maltese.) We have a sweet Havanese ourselves. Extra security deposit and/or cleaning surcharge may be requested if a pet is approved.
